US cancels observation of Uganda elections after 75% of its members denied accreditations

The United States Embassy in Uganda has cancelled its Diplomatic Observer Mission of Uganda’s Elections. According to the Embassy, the vast majority of requests for observing the election were not approved, by the Electoral Commission, leaving them with a skeletal team which cannot meaningfully undertake the task.

“It is with profound disappointment that I announce the U.S. Mission in Uganda’s decision to cancel our diplomatic observation of Uganda’s January 14 elections due to the decision by the Electoral Commission of Uganda to deny more than 75 per cent of the U.S. election observer accreditation’s requested,” she said in a statement by Ambassador Natalie E. Brown.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has explained that the social media, Facebook has been blocked by Government, after the National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporter’s accounts were pulled down.

Over the weekend, hundreds of pro-Government Facebook accounts were pulled down by Facebook. But Facebook says that they removed a network of accounts and Pages in Uganda that engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior to target public debate ahead of the elections.

The Democratic Party- presidential candidate Norbert Mao led a procession in Gulu City on Tuesday evening shortly after addressing his final campaign rally. No sooner had Mao addressed thousands of his supporters at Kaunda Grounds in Layibi-Bardege division than he led them through the streets of Gulu City as police watched helplessly.     

Mao drove in a convoy of about 20 vehicles accompanied by Simon Opoka, the DP Deputy Spokesperson, Lyandro Komakech, the incumbent Gulu Municipality Member of Parliament who running for the Layibi-Bardege Division parliament seat and Gulu City DP Woman parliamentary candidate, Jolly Laker. 

Norbert Mao endorses Jacob Oulanyah re-elections as Omoro county MP Seat

The Democratic Party Presidential candidate, Norbert Mao has endorsed the re-election of bid of the Deputy speaker of parliament and incumbent Omoro County legislator, Jacob Oulanyah.

Addressing the media in Gulu city before winding up his campaigns, Mao, said he has known Oulanyah for the last 30 years and seen his usefulness. 

He noted that he has a long history with Oulanyah despite being from different political parties and asked the people of Omoro to decide well as they cast their votes. 

Uganda Police resorts to arresting pro- Bobi Wine online broadcasters

After a botched attempt by the government to convince tech giants Google and Facebook block bloggers and broadcasters allied to the National Unity Platform-NUP campaigns, police have resorted to arresting them ahead of the Thursday elections.   

On December 9, 2020, the government through Uganda Communications Commission-UCC wrote requesting Google Inc. to block 14 Ugandan based YouTube Channels for broadcasting messages that are likely to compromise national security and incite violence. UCC sent a similar request to Facebook.  

Norbert Mao’s DP wants curfew lifted on polling day

The Democratic Party-DP wants the government to lift the night time curfew on polling days to permit for proper operations of political parties and transparency of elections. Uganda has been under curfew since March 2020 as part of the control measures against the spread of the corona virus disease.  

With a few exceptions, nobody is allowed to move between 9:00pm and 5:30am.  However, the DP National Campaign Coordinator, Fred Mwesigwa wants the Electoral Commission to engage security such that party agents, Election observers and interested members of public are able to move freely so as to follow the election process.
