A curtain of fear and gloom has dropped over Uganda’s intellectual community following the detention of one of Uganda’s foremost writers and one of the few most respected intellectuals, Kakwenza Rukirabashaija,

The top novelist was picked up by what has been described by his lawyers and friends at his home early on the morning of Dec. Tuesday 28th 2021. That was the last time his wife and children have seen him.

The Uganda Police is yet to officially announce that Kakwenza was being detained under the country’s gazetted regulations.

The detention of Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, a 2021 PEN Prize winner for the international writer of courage, had also posted about his arrest Tuesday on Facebook confirming that it was true a gang of security forces had invaded his house.

His Lawyer Eron Kiiza , has raised doubts about the legitimate forms of the arrest of his client and called for his immediate release.

Former FDC President Kizza Besigye said that Kakwenza Abduction and detention will stir up more anger.

The regulations under which Kakwenza was arrested looks as if Uganda no longer respects its own constitution, not anymore. It’s now heading to the sixth day without charge or the possibility of him appearing in court as the law demands.

The general feeling among writers is that Kakwenza ‘s book  “The Greedy Bababrian,” posed a threat to the status quo led by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Kakwenza , who rejects Gen Muhhoozi, has become increasingly critical of Uganda’s top ruling class and he frequently uses ideological terms such as neo-colonialism, exploitation, and imperialism to criticize it in his own writings.

His recent best-selling novel, “Greedy Barbarian,” has been generally acclaimed as the bestselling book existing and critical analysis of Uganda’s post- National Resistance Movement system led by president Museveni.

One well-placed Author Dr. Stella Nyanzi said Kakwenza was detained because ” Kakwenza wrote ugly truths about the first son. Brutal arrest, illegal detention in Naguru, and torture during interrogation neither reduces Muhoozi’s obesity nor transforms Muhoozi from being an addicted drunkard womanizer.”

When Kakwenza was detained, some of his colleagues, some more radical than him, have took to social media to demand his immediate release.

Without a doubt, Uganda still has the liveliest parliament in East Africa maybe and Africa’s freest press, but journalists who are openly critical are harassed and questioned by the police.

Police has come out to confirm that the arrest of Kakwenza is linked to social media posts of abusing President Museveni and his son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kanierugaba
