Ugandan top environmentalists, youths strike calling for climate justice at Bukemba trading center in Kituntu Sub-county in Mpigi district to commemorate the global climate action day.

Over 100 youths accompanied by residents joined the strike blaming world leaders for not taking action to combat global climate change.

While addressing the congregation the team leader of Fridays for Future Uganda Leah Namugerwa asked residents to continue demanding climate justice and carrying out activities that protect the environment like planting trees.

Ms. Namugerwa engaged young children introducing them to the global call of protecting and environment conservation.

The Executive Director of Green Climate Campaign Africa (GCCA) Mr. Timothy Mugerwa appreciated the young generation that is taking the lead to fight for climate justice.

“I really do appreciate the young people for coming up to take the lead demanding for climate justice,” says Mr. Mugerwa.

“Over the years such activities have been organised in Kampala in big hotels. I’m pleased to see such activities in upcountry areas, let us remain focused and demand action not empty promises and nice speeches,” he explained.

Climate change may not be at the top of the agenda for many political leaders in Uganda but it is for many young people.

Since 2019 young people have been marching to demand climate action from their leaders.

The numbers have been growing since 2019 which has also seen the climate movement grow and spread across the country.

While the protests have been happening, leaders are yet to take any serious action which worries young people. On September 24th 2021 , through their umbrella organization Fridays For Future Uganda, youth organized climate strikes in different parts of the country that included; Kampala, Mpigi, Masaka, Gulu and Mbale. The main event was held in Mpigi district.

The purpose of the climate strike was to remind government and world leaders of the urgent need for climate action.

The protest’s theme was; “Uproot the system”. Climate activists across the globe believe that climate inaction and the continued destruction of nature is caused by systems that benefit from it.

In order to have serious action, the system has to be uprooted. The climate strikes in Uganda were part of the global strikes that happened all over the world.
