Besigye: Gen Katumba shooting is worrisome when he recovers must urgently work for a change of direction in Uganda.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) founding president Rtd Col Kizza Besigye has spoken out on the failed assassination attempt on Gen Katumba Wamaala Edward.

The former Police IGP and UPDF commander’s official car was shot at in Kisota , Kisaasi by unknown assailants traveling on two motorbikes commonly known as Boda Boda.

The fierce General car was showered with bullets which killed his daughter Brenda Joy Nantongo and his driver Kayondo.

The outgoing Minister for Works and Transport is currently admitted at Medipal hospital in Kampala with bullet injuries in his shoulders and chest.

Reacting to the shooting, Opposition activist Besigye clearly stated that these are not ordinary criminal acts,

He stated, “Horror! Uganda’s Transport and Works Minister; former Head of Uganda’s Military and Head of Uganda Police is attacked on the road by gunmen, instantly killing his daughter and driver!

This happened intriguingly close to the place where a Police Chief, AIGP Andrew Kaweesi, was gunned down about same time 4 years ago. Kaweesi’s killers are yet to be found. Similarly, was the gunning down of Hon Abiriga and his brother/ bodyguard a year later.

This is as greatly saddening as it’s worrisome. My thoughts, deeply felt sympathy and prayers go to Gen Katumba Wamala and his bereaved family; his colleagues and friends; and to all right-thinking Ugandans.

Clearly, these are not ordinary criminal acts. Violence and instability will continue to cripple our country until we realise the fundamental importance of having social, political and economic systems that are fair and work for all Ugandans.

Ugandans of goodwill (including Gen Katumba, when he recovers) must urgently work for a change of direction in our country.
