The body of a 36-year-old fisherman who drowned in River Mayanja in Nakaseke district on Tuesday last week has finally been retrieved. Henry Ganga drowned in River Mayanja at Nvunaanwa village in Segalye Parish in Semuto Sub-County when the Canoe he was using with three other people capsized in the river.

According to source, the canoe lost balance and capsized when Ganga’s friends jumped into the river. The canoe overturned throwing Ganga in the water.  His colleagues tried to rescue him in vain since he didn’t know how to swim.

They were forced to swim to the shoreline to call for help, according to Moses Male, a friend to the deceased. Ganga was a resident of Mugomola village where he could often set off to join friends for fishing.

Simon Peter Kayogera, the Mugomola LC 1 chairperson, says when the survivors reported the incident residents joined police officers from Kalege Police Station to search for Ganga.

He, however, says the search didn’t yield results until Friday evening when the body surfaced at Bugabo landing site where it was sighted by fishermen.  He says marine police came and took the body for postmortem.

Last month, a 10-year-old boy drowned in a dam in Luweero while trying to fetch water with his siblings.  The incident happened at Gayaaza village in Butuntumula Sub County.  The victim lost balance and fell in the dam after stepping on soft ground.
