Police have shot dead a man while responding to a hostile situation resulting from the theft of a cow in Rubanda district.

The deceased is Seki Barekye, a resident of Kashenyi in Bubare sub-county in Rubanda district.

According to eyewitnesses, Barekye was shot in the stomach around 6:00m on Wednesday evening at Kanaba village in Bubaare trading centre in Bubaare Sub County.

Moses Twakiire, an eye witness says that it all started when Gaudesia Bamwangiraki made an alarm around 9:00 AM about the disappearance of his cow.

Shortly after reporting the matter at Bubaare police post, it was discovered that Barekye Bamwangiraki’s son had stolen the cow and sold it to Martin Ndyomugyenyi, a resident of Bubare trading centre.

Twakiire says police and residents conducted an operation and found that the cow had already been slaughtered in Bubaare trading center.

This didn’t go down with the residents who attempted to lynch Ndyomugyenyi.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, says police shot in the air to disperse the charged residents but Barekye who was armed with a machete threatened to hack the officers in a move to defend Ndyomugyenyi.

He says police officers shot twice in the air, but Barekye moved closer prompting one of the officers to shoot him in the stomach.

He was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral hospital where he breathed his last a few minutes later.

Barekye is the second person to be killed with a day’s space for attempting to attack a police officer with a machete.

Eliot Kabangira, a resident of Bubare 1 Rutooma Kitagata in Sheema district also met his death after being shot by a police officer for attempting to arrest him for threatening violence.

About a week ago, two police officers were also hacked to death and another injured in a clash with Bukwo residents over the arrest of a suspected rapist.
