Just In: Suspected Car Thief Lynched in Lyantonde, Accomplice Rescued In Critical Condition

A mob has lynched a suspected vehicle thief and critically his accomplice in Lyantonde district. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Kaliiro Ward in Lyantonde town council. 

It is alleged that the suspects Dennis Kiberu, who was driving a Premio vehicle registration number UBD 184N from Lyantonde town to take them to Kasambya village to purportedly pick up a patient from a shrine. 

However, when they reached a secluded area, they told him to stop. They suddenly grabbed and tied him. According to Kiberu, he wrestled his attackers for several minutes until they subdued him.    

His attempts to raise alarm for help were futile as his attacker beat him up and super-glued his mouth. They dumped him in a nearby forest before making off with the car.

However, Kiberu managed to free himself a few minutes later and called for help to track his car before it was too late.

Special hire drivers in Lyantonde launched a search for the vehicle and received information that it had been sighted Kaliiro.

They followed and intercepted the car at Kalagala village were they forced out the two occupants and beat them with clubs.  

One of the suspects died on the spot while police arrived in time to rescue another in critical condition.

Police first took the survivor to record a statement before rushing him to the hospital for treatment. According to special hire drivers and residents, theft of cars and number plates has resumed.

Dennis Odoki, the Lyantonde District Police Commander, says the deceased suspect’s body is lying at Lyantonde Hospital mortuary pending postmortem as investigations continue.

He says the surviving suspect will help the ongoing police investigations as they look for other suspects.
