Residents Kill Pregnant Buffalo, Hunt 2 Others

Angry residents of Lajong 7 corner village in Bardege Layibi division of Gulu City have joined Uganda Wild Life Authority and Police to hunt for two stray buffaloes after killing one on Wednesday evening.

The three buffalos have reportedly been terrorizing the village for the past one month, eating and living along Tochi Stream.   

Patrick Nencan, a resident of the area says the buffalos had already injured one bull, eating a 40m by 40m and  a 15m by 15m gardens of potatoes and Okra respectively three days ago. 

According to Nencan, over 100 residents who were fed up with the animals living in the area alerted the Police and UWA rangers who led the hunt, killing one which was pregnant while the other two fled. 

Geoffrey Okello, the area LCI chairperson says one buffalo was injured while it fled attack by the members of the community, UWA and the Police. He is now calling for more vigilance from the members of the community.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa region Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident saying UWA rangers are still present in the community as the hunt for the other two continues.

Stray wild animals including Hippos, buffaloes, elephants among others, mostly from the Murchison falls National Park have been terrorizing locals in Nwoya, Gulu and Amuru districts in recent times.
