Just In: NUP collects over 7 million signatures for Bobi Wine’s presidential bid for EC verification. Whisper Eye Reports
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has collected over 7 million signatures from Uganda registered voters that support Kyadondo East MP Hon Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine as its flag-bearer in the coming 2020/2021 presidential race.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the political party’s spokesman, said the signatures will be submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission sometime this week by NUP Secretary General Lewis and the Deputy Secretary General Aisha Kabanda.
NUP’s Joel Ssenyonyi is quoted as saying that the party is appreciative of the warm reception accorded by the change yearning Ugandan plight.
“Ugandans are still sending signatures from all corners of the country but we already hit the tally. Despite this, we are still receiving the signatures and any time this week we will submit to the EC,” Ssenyonyi says.
“We are overly excited by the people who have this time round exhibited too much commitment to change. With the signatures raised countrywide, it’s a signal that people are exceedingly tired of the 35 years of misrule,” he adds.
Whisper Eye has learnt from our trusted sources at the Kamwokya camp that the party signatures were collected from registered voters across the 142 districts of Uganda and many are still to be collected targeting10 million signatures.
The Electoral Commission on 21st September had started the verification of signatures for the nomination of candidates for the 2021Presidential Elections.
As of September 25th , at least 82 aspirants had collected nomination forms and supporter forms to run for the presidency.
President Museveni’s NRM submitted 5 million signatures last week to the EC collected throughout the country.
Section10(b) of the Presidential Elections Act provides that a Presidential candidate’s nomination shall be supported by not less than one hundred (100)persons who are registered voters, from not less than ninety-eight (98)districts, which form two thirds (2/3) of all the districts of Uganda.
Due to the sizeable number of signatures required for nomination as a Presidential candidate, aspiring candidates have been advised to submit the lists of supporters to the Commission for verification at least two weeks before the nomination dates, that is, at least by October 16 .
The aspirants also need more than 100 signatures from each district/city, to cater for shortfalls. Once a candidate has verified supporters from at least 98districts/cities, they will get a certificate which they will present to the Returning Officer on nomination day.
Nominations will end on Tuesday 3rd November 2020.
